A library is many things. However the Lawson McGhee Library can be particularly helpful when you are in the initial phase of starting a new business. Their Business Reference Center can show you where to obtain the information you need to answer questions you might have. And best of all, the service is FREE.
A basic book available to you is Starting & Operating a Business in Tennessee - a step-by-step guide.
There are many books available on how to start particular businesses which you can check out and take home to study.
There is a complete list of all kinds of associations that may be able to provide you with assistance in starting the type of business you plan to open. While not every type of business has an association, most do. For example, there are several hairdresser associations but only one Cinnamon Rabbit Breeders Association.
If you have never developed a business plan, take a look at the Business Plan Handbook. It contains five volumes of sample business plans of many types of business (not every type) prepared by actual businesses. Most of the time you are provided with formats or lists of what should be included in your business plan, but you seldom see an ACTUAL business plan.
The Small Business Sourcebook provides you with a list of books, associations, suppliers and other information by type of business. While this is a valuable resource to investigate before starting your business it is also how to keep yourself up-to-date about your type of business on a continual basis.
A Directory of Local Organizations in which you might find the services you are looking for.
The American Business Disc can provide you with information on your competitors and potential business customers. The data can be selected geographically, by business size and by kind of business.
If you're wondering where to purchase the materials you need to conduct your business, supplier information on just about everything is available.
The personnel at the Business Reference Desk check business names, trade names and trademarks. If you call, they will check to see if one or two names are currently in use or trademarked. If you have a longer list of names to be checked, they will show you how to search for the names.
The library provides you access to the Internet. The librarians can assist you with your business search strategy.
This handout would be many, many pages if all the types of information available at the Lawson McGhee Library were listed. There are books on just about any subject, including: franchising; demographic data pertaining to the Knoxville area and includes number of people by income level, lifestyle types, etc.; statement studies which will provide the profitability potential by type of business; and how to obtain financing.
